Dear students, parents and members of the MS 358 community,
It is with my deepest sympathy that I inform you of the passing of Tyrick Smith-Carter aka “Mr. T”. Mr. T was struck by a vehicle on the morning of June 23rd and was found unresponsive. Mr. T embraced all of our core values at MS 358 and had a profound impact on everyone he interacted with. Please join me and send your prayers and thoughts to Mr. T’s family and the MS 358 family and community. We will honor Mr. T and his legacy as we close out the 2019-2020 school year by revising our virtual graduation with a tribute to him.
One fact that you may not have known about Mr. T is that he was a student of mine at Clara Barton High School, when I taught Earth Science. Tyrick and I become friends and he was able to shine his light and love throughout MS 358 for the past few years. I will personally miss him, his genuine spirit, and his trademark laugh. Please join me with upholding the memory of Mr. T by committing to a life of fellowship, integrity, resiliency, excellence and advocacy.
Respectfully submitted by,
Brendan T. Mims

Dear MS358Q Community,
As many as you have learned, school will be closed. The mayor announced that the earliest we will reopen will be Monday April 20th.
Teachers will be meeting to discuss how we can best support learning these upcoming weeks so there is no disruption in student growth.
Please stay close to your email for any further updates. More information to come.
Below you will find more information from the NYC department of education about our closing.
Please continue to stay positive, wash your hands and follow any guidelines set by our city leaders.
Since time is already held on school and parent calendars this week for conferences, Parent Teacher Conferences proceed Thursday, March 12 as planned. But, instead of convening them in person, we are asking you to participate virtually or by phone.
Someone from our school will proactively contact you about participating in the phone or virtual conferences. If you are unable to connect virtually or by phone during the 3/12 afternoon and evening conference times, we can reschedule for a time that would be convenient for you.
To get ready for the Parent Teacher Conferences, families can access their child’s grades through the New York City Schools Account (NYCSA). If you don’t have an account yet, visit:
At MS 358, we support student learning through rigorous instruction that incorporates passionate speaking, purposeful writing, powerful presentations, and digital literacy through S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
